Damageable Cars: Real Crash Damage, Fire and Smoke for Unreal Engine

Three drivable cars that crush where they are hit, shed their panels, crack their windscreens and burn under smoke: a sedan, a full-size SUV and a compact crossover, with the C++ damage and crash-effects runtime, the crash effect and a crash yard sample level. Unreal Engine 5.7 - 5.8.

Damageable Cars is three drivable cars that take real damage. Drive one into a wall, a pole or another car and its body crushes where it was struck, its panels come off and its glass breaks, and a hard enough hit sets it burning under a column of black smoke.

Damage - The body crushes where it is struck, as deep as the impact's energy drives it: about 20 cm at 25 km/h and about 60 cm at 56 km/h into a rigid barrier, like a crash-tested car, and it stops at the engine block. - Dents stay where they land and add up hit after hit; paint scrapes to bare steel; the car's collision follows its dents. - Bonnets, bumpers, doors, mirrors and wheel corners tear off and fall as physics bodies. - Laminated windscreens crack into a web and stay in place; side and rear glass bursts into pieces. - Car against car: both bodies are damaged by how hard each is hit and where.

Fire and smoke - Sparks and dust on every hit; on a hard one, a fuel fireball, then the struck engine bay burns under a black smoke column with the fire's own light. - One Niagara system, picked by the impact's energy: a fender bender throws dust, a 100 km/h wall hit burns.

The cars - Sedan, full-size SUV and compact crossover, each a Blueprint you place and drive: W/S throttle and brake, A/D steer, Space handbrake, Tab next car, R repair, C camera. - Baked texture sets, modelled engine bays, cabins with seats, dash and steering wheel.

Crash yard sample level - An asphalt yard of three marked lanes ending at a rigid brick wall: a straight run to the wall, a parked crossover to T-bone, concrete bollards and a utility pole, guardrails under parking-lot light poles. Press Play, drive, wreck the cars and test.

Technical - C++ source for both runtime modules (BADamage, BACrashFx), Win64; Fab builds them for your engine. - Needs only plugins that ship with Unreal: Procedural Mesh Component and Niagara. - Each car is one deforming mesh with no levels of detail: sedan 358,520 triangles, full-size SUV 211,625, crossover 213,363.
